Setting Goals

Participating in the CrossFit Games Open WODs has helped point out some of my weaknesses.  I already know most of them, but this has motivated me to focus on improving myself in my weak areas moreso than I have been lately.

Mainly, I need to work on pressing overhead, cleans, snatches, and then muscle ups and handstand push ups.  I found out last week that I have not improved in my Shoulder Press in the last YEAR!  That is ridiculous…..I should have improved at least a small amount – even 5 pounds!  I also haven’t improved enough with handstand push ups either.  And, I can’t always achieve a muscle up when I try – I have done more since my first ones in January, but I want to be able to hit them consistently each time I try so that I can do a full WOD that contains them!

For the strength work I keep hearing over and over that the Wendler program is the best.  So, I’ll be hitting my 1 rep max’s over the next week so that I can set some good baselines to get started with Wendler for at least 3, maybe 4, of the strength moves I want to improve most on.

For the muscle ups and handstand push ups, I’ve heard that doing a 20 minute “volume” workout can be super beneficial.  This would consist of 20 minutes of a set number of reps each minute on the minute.  I’ll need to find my max of muscle ups and handstand push ups first, and then make my plan.

I’m amazed at how much I’ve improved over the last 2 and a half years, and I’ve overcome a childhood/youth of no sports or fitness.  It wasn’t easy, and its been a long road.  People who are involved in sports and fitness when they are kids or at least in their 20′s have it so much easier than someone who starts when they are almost 30!!

If I had known then what I know now…….
